Richard Paul Astley (born 6 February 1966) is an English singer, songwriter and musician best known for his smooth, deep voice and a string of late 1980s pop hits. He was born in Great Sankey, Warrington, and raised in Newton-le-Willows in the north-west of England. Astley has lived in London and elsewhere and is married to film producer Lene Bausager; they have a daughter, Emilie.

Career and breakthrough

Astley first attracted wide attention as a solo artist in the mid-1980s. His debut single, "Never Gonna Give You Up," released in 1987 and produced by the hit-making team Stock Aitken Waterman, became an international chart success and established his clean vocal delivery and pop-dance sensibility. That single anchored his early album work and led to further hits and television appearances across Europe and beyond.

Style, voice and musical approach

Astley is often noted for a warm baritone voice that lent a mature tone to upbeat, synth-driven production. His recordings combine elements of pop, soul and dance; he has performed both upbeat singles and more restrained ballads. Over his career he has worked as a singer and songwriter and has been involved in the arrangement and performance of instruments on studio recordings and live shows.

After intense success in the late 1980s, Astley scaled back his public profile in the 1990s to focus on family life and selective music projects. He gradually returned to recording and touring, maintaining a steady fan base and receiving renewed attention for later albums and live performances. A 2016 album marked a notable commercial comeback in his native UK and introduced his work to a younger audience.

Legacy and the rickrolling phenomenon

In the 2000s a playful internet prank called "rickrolling" — baiting users with a link that leads to the music video for "Never Gonna Give You Up" — turned Astley into a familiar figure for a new generation. Rather than resisting the joke, he embraced the renewed exposure, sometimes appearing in playful public stunts and interviews about the meme. That phenomenon brought long-term fans and curious newcomers back to his recordings.

Astley remains active in music through recording, touring and occasional collaborations. His career is often cited as an example of a pop star who combined early mainstream success with later reinvention and a congenial relationship to popular culture.
