Playing career: clubs and milestones

Aufhauser began in local youth sides ASK Köflach and ASK Voitsberg before joining the professional ranks with Austria Salzburg in the late 1990s. He established himself at the club level and then moved to Grazer AK, where he was part of the squad that won the Austrian Bundesliga in 2004. Following the Red Bull takeover of Austria Salzburg and the club's reorganisation, he returned to Salzburg and featured regularly through the late 2000s.

In January 2010 Aufhauser transferred to LASK Linz. After LASK encountered licensing and sporting difficulties, he left and later signed for FC Liefering, the farm team closely associated with Red Bull Salzburg. With Liefering he helped the side gain promotion from the Regionalliga and consolidate at a higher level before retiring as a player in 2014.

International career and recognition

Aufhauser earned 58 caps for the Austria national team, representing his country across several qualifying campaigns and international friendlies.
