Background and election

Anastasius II was an Italian cleric elevated to the Roman see after the death of Pope Gelasius I. Little is reliably recorded about his early life or career; surviving notices emphasize his Roman identity and the brevity of his time as pope. Contemporary sources are sparse, and later narratives vary in interpretation.

Policy toward the East

During Anastasius's papacy the long‑running Acacian schism (begun in 484) continued to divide East and West. Anastasius adopted a conciliatory tone and made overtures intended to restore communion with Constantinople. These efforts reportedly included correspondence and a willingness to receive representatives from the Eastern patriarchate, measures that aimed at church unity but stopped short of formal compromises on disputed theological language.

Controversy and perception

His willingness to negotiate with Eastern authorities drew criticism from some Western clergy who feared compromise with positions they regarded as unacceptable. In later medieval and polemical accounts Anastasius's actions were sometimes judged harshly; modern historians tend to treat those assessments cautiously and place them in the context of the fierce ecclesiastical and political struggles of the era.

Death and aftermath

Anastasius died on 16 November 498. His death precipitated a contested election between the candidates Symmachus and Laurentius, a dispute that became known as the Laurentian schism and which had lasting implications for papal election procedures and the relationship of the Roman clergy with secular powers.
