Early life and singles career

As a junior and then a senior singles skater, Nam rose rapidly through the U.S. ranks. The highlight of her early career came at the 1999 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, where, at the age of 13, she won the silver medal behind veteran champion Michelle Kwan. The result was widely reported as a remarkable achievement given her age and competitive experience. Because of age eligibility rules set by the sport’s governing bodies, Nam was not able to follow that national podium with an immediate senior World Championship appearance despite her high placing.

Injury and transition to pairs

Following her breakthrough as a singles skater, Nam experienced hip problems that disrupted her singles career and limited her ability to train and compete at the previous level. After several seasons affected by injury and recovery, she chose to return to competition in a different discipline. In 2005 she formed a pairs partnership with Themistocles Leftheris. The new team adapted quickly: they finished fifth at the 2006 U.S. Championships, took bronze at the 2006 Skate America Grand Prix event, and earned the U.S. national bronze medal in 2007. The pair also represented the United States at the 2007 Four Continents Championships, placing sixth.

Nam’s background as a top-level singles skater informed her pairs work. She brought unusually strong side-by-side jumping ability and soaring lines into pair elements such as side-by-side double and triple jumps and throw jumps.
