Overview

Mohammad Khaled Hossain (born 30 October 1978 — died 21 May 2013), often called Sajal Khaled, was a Bangladeshi creative professional and high-altitude climber. His Bengali name can be written as মোহাম্মদ খালেদ হোসেন. Hossain combined a career in filmmaking with an active involvement in mountaineering and became nationally known after a successful summit of the world's highest mountain.

Career and interests

Professionally he worked as a movie director and was also active in Bangladesh's climbing community as a mountaineer. Accounts of his early life and filmography are limited in broad sources, but he is remembered for pursuing both artistic projects and demanding outdoor expeditions, a combination that drew public attention after his Everest climb.

Everest ascent

On 21 May 2013 Hossain reached the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Reports state he reached the top at around 10:00–11:00 a.m. BST and hoisted the national flag of Bangladesh to mark the accomplishment. By doing so he became the fifth person from Bangladesh recorded to reach Everest's summit, an achievement widely covered in national media.

Accident and death

Hossain died during the descent from Everest on the same day he reached the summit. Public reports indicate the fatal incident occurred hours after summiting, though precise details about the cause and exact circumstances were not conclusively published in widely available sources. As with many high-altitude tragedies, factors such as extreme weather, exhaustion, altitude sickness, and exposure are common contributors, but definitive conclusions require official investigation reports.

Legacy and significance

Hossain's successful ascent and subsequent death highlighted both the pride and the risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering for Bangladesh. His climb reinforced national interest in Himalayan expeditions and prompted discussion about climber safety, expedition support, and training. He is remembered by peers and admirers for his dual role in the arts and adventure sports.
