Michael Tilson Thomas (born December 21, 1944) is an American musician whose career spans conducting, performance and composition. He is widely known as a conductor, and also performs as a pianist and writes music as a composer. He led the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra as music director from 1995 until 2020 and continues to maintain a close relationship with that orchestra in the role of Music Director Laureate.
