Early life and stage work

Gough began performing on stage and developed a reputation as a reliable supporting player on both classical and contemporary bills. His theatrical grounding informed a film and television career in which he could convincingly play urbane confidants, eccentric figures or menacing authorities. He was frequently cast in parts that called for precise timing and subtle shifts of mood rather than broad heroics.

Film career and Hammer Horror

From the late 1950s he became a familiar presence in the Gothic productions of Hammer Film Productions, contributing to the studio's atmospheric style. Over decades he appeared in a wide variety of genres — from period drama and mystery to horror and fantasy — which made him one of the go‑to supporting actors for many British directors. He also worked in television and radio, bringing the same attention to detail to small roles as to larger supporting parts.

Alfred Pennyworth and blockbuster visibility

Gough's best known later role was as Alfred Pennyworth in the series of studio Batman films beginning with the 1989 Batman. He reprised the role across the sequels Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, becoming closely associated with the character for a generation of viewers. Along with actor Pat Hingle, he is one of two performers to appear in all four films directed by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher.

Collaborations and later work

Gough worked repeatedly with directors who valued his capacity for subtle coloration. He appeared in several films by Tim Burton, including a role in Sleepy Hollow and providing voice work for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. He also had a small part in Burton's take on Alice in Wonderland, demonstrating his continuing presence in large contemporary productions even late in life.
