Overview

Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born February 14, 1942) is an American business magnate, politician and philanthropist. He is the founder and principal owner of Bloomberg L.P., a company originally built around the Bloomberg Terminal that expanded into news, data and technology services. Bloomberg has been a prominent figure in business, municipal policy and national philanthropy for several decades.

Early life and education

Bloomberg was born in 1942 and raised in Massachusetts. After completing undergraduate studies he earned an MBA and began a career in financial services. Experiences in trading and information services shaped his later decision to create a market-data business focused on real-time information for professional users.

Business career and Bloomberg L.P.

He founded the company that became Bloomberg L.P., which introduced the Bloomberg Terminal as a bundled hardware-software service providing financial data, analytics and messaging. Over time the enterprise diversified into global news, analytics, indices and software tools used by financial institutions, corporations and governments.

Mayor of New York City (2002–2013)

Bloomberg served three terms as the Mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013. His administration emphasized data-driven management, public-health initiatives and long-range planning. Notable efforts included restrictions on public smoking, pilot programs for calorie labeling, investments in public spaces and the PlaNYC sustainability planning effort.

  • Management style: emphasis on metrics, performance measurement and public-private partnerships.
  • Urban initiatives: parks, bike lanes, waterfront development and infrastructure planning.
  • Education and services: reforms and collaborations with city agencies and nonprofit partners.

Philanthropy and civic engagement

Bloomberg Philanthropies funds programs in public health, climate action, education, the arts and civic leadership. The philanthropic strategy combines grantmaking with policy advocacy and technical support for city governments and nonprofit organizations. He has been active in efforts to reduce gun violence, tackle climate change and support global public-health programs.

2020 presidential campaign

In November 2019 Bloomberg announced his presidential campaign seeking the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2020. Entering as a late, self-funded candidate, he invested heavily in advertising and organizational infrastructure. After the results on Super Tuesday, he suspended his campaign in March 2020 and subsequently endorsed the party's nominee.

Controversies and legacy

Bloomberg's legacy is mixed. Supporters cite long-term urban reforms, innovations in financial information and major philanthropic commitments. Critics point to the scale of his wealth, concerns about the role of money in politics and debates over policing and certain policies enacted while he was mayor. He remains an influential figure in business, urban policy and philanthropy.
