Overview

Lu Andrade, born Luciana Andrade in Varginha on 18 September 1978, is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and presenter. She first reached national prominence in 2002 as one of the winners of the televised casting show Popstars and as a founding member of the girl group Rouge. After leaving the group in 2004 she developed a varied career as a solo artist and collaborator, expanding into musical theatre, television work and vocal instruction. Andrade's professional path illustrates a transition from mainstream pop success toward a more independent and multifaceted artistic profile.

Early life and rise to fame

Raised in the southern region of Minas Gerais, Andrade moved into the national spotlight through the Popstars competition, which selected and promoted a new girl group. Rouge quickly became one of Brazil's best-selling pop acts of the early 2000s. While with the group she took part in the recording of two studio albums, Rouge (2002) and C'est La Vie (2003), which established the ensemble as a major commercial success in Brazilian pop music.

Rouge and departure (2002–2004)

Rouge combined pop, dance and teen-oriented songwriting with choreographed live shows and television promotion. The group achieved widespread sales and media attention, becoming one of Brazil's most commercially successful female ensembles. Andrade left Rouge in 2004, publicly explaining that she felt a growing lack of identification with the musical direction and style the project was taking. Her departure marked a turning point in her career as she sought to redefine her musical identity outside of a producer-driven pop formula.

Solo career and collaborations

After a pause from the public eye, Andrade returned to São Paulo to continue her musical education and to develop a more personal approach to performance. She worked extensively as a backing vocalist for a variety of Brazilian artists and bands across genres, including Negra Li, Nasi, Furto, Forgotten Boys, Sérgio Britto and Eric Silver. These collaborations exposed her to rock, soul and alternative influences and helped refine her vocal technique and stylistic versatility.

Theatre, television and teaching

Andrade broadened her artistic activities beyond studio recording and pop performance. Between 2007 and 2009 she worked as a reporter for the cable programme Show Total, gaining experience in television production and presenting. In 2010 she made her stage debut in the Brazilian production of the musical Into the Woods, demonstrating an interest in theatrical performance and musical theatre repertoire. Later she became involved in online cultural programming and, returning to formal music education, served as a singing instructor at Conservatory Souza Lima, where she had previously studied.

Independent projects and later reunions (2012–present)

As a solo performer Andrade released material in the 2010s, including the single "Mind and Heart" (2012) and "Amanheceu" (2014). In 2015 she formed Duo Elétrico with guitarist Ciro Visconti, performing rock covers and intimate sets that highlighted a rawer live sound. She also served as guest vocalist for the band Áries during the group's 25th-anniversary tour. In 2016 she presented the cultural programme Programa Acesso Cultural online and continued teaching voice.

In 2017 Andrade reunited with the original Rouge line-up for a series of shows initially tied to the Chá da Alice project; this led to a longer-term return and participation in the group's subsequent touring activity and new recordings beginning in 2018. That same year she took part in the television dance competition Dancing Brasil, which broadened her presence in Brazilian entertainment beyond music alone.

Musical style and legacy

Lu Andrade's musical trajectory moves from the highly produced pop of an early-2000s girl group toward a more personal and exploratory solo approach. Her post‑Rouge work embraces acoustic, rock and singer-songwriter elements and places emphasis on live performance, vocal expression and artistic autonomy. In addition to recording and performing, Andrade's activities as a backing vocalist, theatre performer, television presenter and vocal teacher contribute to her reputation as a versatile figure in contemporary Brazilian music.
