This page provides a concise list of notable streams and rivers in the Republic of the Congo, with brief notes on where they flow and the drainage systems they belong to.

Overview

The Republic of the Congo lies mainly within the Congo Basin; much of the country is drained toward the Congo River system. In the south and southwest, a separate coastal drainage carries water to the Gulf of Guinea. Rivers are important for local transport, seasonal flooding, and wetland ecosystems, and they range from large navigable channels to smaller, forested streams.

Major rivers

  • Congo River — The region's principal waterway. The river forms part of the international boundary with the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo; the capitals Brazzaville and Kinshasa sit on opposite banks of the Congo.
  • Sangha River — A significant tributary of the Congo River that drains large areas of northern Congo and supports extensive floodplain forests.
  • Ubangi River — One of the Congo River's largest tributaries; its basin influences drainage in the northern parts of the central African region.
  • Kouilou-Niari River — The main river system discharging to the Atlantic along the country's southwestern coast; it drains parts of the Niari and Kouilou regions.
  • Likouala-aux-Herbes — A swampy, slow-flowing river in the north that is part of the broader Congo Basin wetlands.
  • Likouala-Mossaka — Another of the Likouala rivers; it contributes to the extensive wetland networks in the northern lowlands.

Drainage patterns and regions

Two principal drainage patterns are visible:

  1. Congo Basin drainage: Rivers and tributaries that ultimately flow into the Congo River and then to the Atlantic. These waterways dominate the central and northern parts of the country.
  2. Coastal drainage: Shorter rivers that flow directly to the Gulf of Guinea in the south and southwest, of which the Kouilou-Niari system is the principal example.

Notes

  • This article highlights several of the more prominent rivers but is not an exhaustive inventory.
  • Local names and spellings can vary; many rivers have seasonal changes in discharge and navigability.
