Organization and administration

Districts are headed by senior state-appointed officials, typically a District Collector (also called District Magistrate) responsible for revenue, development programs and coordination of government departments. Law-and-order responsibilities are normally vested in a Superintendent of Police. Districts are further subdivided into tehsils (or talukas), blocks and villages, with urban areas managed by municipal bodies and rural areas by panchayats.

History and development

The district system in Madhya Pradesh evolved from colonial-era administrative units and was reshaped after Indian independence. The present count of 55 reflects such adjustments made over time.

Districts play an essential role in elections, resource allocation, statistical reporting and local identity. Major cities such as Bhopal and Indore serve as important district headquarters and regional hubs for commerce, education and government services.
