Overview

Leontyne Price (born February 10, 1927) is an American soprano whose career made her one of the first Black artists to achieve sustained international prominence in opera. She became especially associated with the works of Verdi, and her interpretations of leading Verdi heroines were widely admired for their combination of warm timbre, dramatic intensity and refined musicianship.

Voice and repertoire

Price's voice is often described as a lyric-dramatic soprano: rich in the middle register, with a radiant upper range and expressive phrasing. While Verdi roles are central to her reputation, her repertoire also encompassed French and German works, concert music and art song. Her stage presence and clear diction contributed as much to her success as the tonal beauty of her instrument.

Career highlights

Beginning in the mid-20th century, Price built a career that spanned major opera houses and recital halls. She was a regular guest with leading companies and toured internationally, giving performances that drew critical acclaim and broadened opportunities for singers of color. Her name became synonymous with some of Verdi's most demanding soprano parts.

Legacy and recordings

Price's recordings and filmed performances preserved exemplary interpretations that continue to be studied by singers and appreciated by listeners. She earned major recording honors and other civic recognitions during and after her active career. Beyond awards, her wider importance lies in opening doors for later generations of Black opera singers and in shaping expectations about expressive singing in large-scale repertoire.

Today she is remembered both for the distinctive beauty of her tone and for the cultural barrier-breaking nature of her career. Her artistry remains a frequent subject of biographies, retrospectives and music study, and selections from her recorded legacy are still widely circulated and performed.
