John Trumbull — American Neoclassical Painter of the Revolution

Early life and artistic training

Born in Connecticut and educated at Harvard College, Trumbull began his career during the Revolutionary conflict and served with the Continental forces in various capacities. After the war he pursued art more fully and traveled to London, where he studied with prominent artists and absorbed the neoclassical style then in vogue. He relied on sittings with surviving participants, printed portraits and sketches to reconstruct scenes many years after the events.

Major works

Trumbull produced a number of large canvases intended as public history paintings. Four of his most prominent works hang in the United States Capitol Rotunda and are among his best-known pieces:

• Declaration of Independence (commissioned and completed after many studies)
• The Surrender of General Burgoyne
• The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis
• The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill

His Declaration scene was widely reproduced and later used as the model for the reverse of the United States two-dollar bill, making the composition familiar to a broad public.

Style, method and legacy

Trumbull worked in a restrained neoclassical manner: balanced compositions, clear outlines and an emphasis on dignified poses rather than dramatic action. He strove for likeness and historical fidelity within the conventions of ceremonial painting, assembling figures from individual studies into coherent groupings. His paintings serve both as art and as documentary attempts to record the appearance of key Revolutionary figures.

In later life Trumbull donated and bequeathed works and papers to educational institutions, helping preserve a large collection of portraits, studies and correspondence.
