Career and style

Ford began directing short subjects and silent features before rising to prominence with sound pictures. He favored clear compositions, deep staging and an economy of cutting that emphasized character and landscape. Monument Valley, whose monumental buttes recur in his work, became almost a character in its own right. Ford frequently cast a regular repertory of actors and collaborators, most famously his long collaboration with actor John Wayne.

Among Ford's most acclaimed titles are Stagecoach, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, The Quiet Man and The Searchers. He won four Academy Awards for Best Director—a record—including honors for The Informer, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley and The Quiet Man.
