After a successful club career in Germany, Italy, France and England he became a prominent international figure and later moved into management.
Playing career — clubs and style
Klinsmann began his senior career as a teenager with VfB Stuttgart and went on to play for several major European clubs. Noted for his intelligent runs and persistence off the ball, he operated primarily as a centre-forward but was comfortable drifting wide and participating in the press.

Managerial career and influence
After retiring as a player Klinsmann moved into coaching. He was appointed head coach of the Germany national team in 2004 and introduced changes in training and player preparation. Germany hosted the World Cup of 2006 and finished third under his leadership. He later handed the national team reins to Joachim Löw, who continued the programme.
In August 2011 Klinsmann accepted the job as head coach of the United States men's national team, a high-profile role in which he promoted player development and a more attack-minded approach. His tenure sparked debate over tactics and selection but also raised the international profile of U.S. soccer.
