Overview

Glen Matlock (born 27 August 1956) is an English musician best known as the original bassist and a primary songwriter for the early Sex Pistols. As the group's first bassist, Matlock helped shape the sound and songcraft of the band during its formative years with the Sex Pistols. He combined pop sensibilities with punk energy, and he is often credited for providing melodic basslines and co-writing many of the band's early songs.

Role in the Sex Pistols and departure

Matlock joined the Sex Pistols in the mid-1970s and played on much of the material that would define the era. He is credited as a co-writer on numerous tracks recorded during that period, including material that appeared on the album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols. In early 1977 he left the band under contested circumstances: Matlock has said musical differences and his fondness for 1960s pop — he has cited bands such as the Beatles as influences — were factors, while other accounts describe management decisions and internal tensions. After his departure he was replaced by John Ritchie, better known as Sid Vicious, who became a public symbol of the band's later image.

Later career and collaborations

After leaving the Sex Pistols, Matlock formed and led the rock group the Rich Kids, which blended punk's attitude with pop and glam influences. Over subsequent decades he pursued session work, led his own projects, and appeared with various musicians across rock and pop genres. He has taken part in anniversary shows and partial reunions of his earlier bands and has toured as a solo artist.

Reunions and public life

Matlock has joined various reunion lineups over the years. In 2010 it was announced he would take part in a reunion of The Faces scheduled to play at the Vintage at Goodwood festival in London (Goodwood). He has also appeared with reformed versions of his earlier bands for anniversary concerts and special events. In more recent years he has spoken publicly on political matters, including expressing opposition to Brexit, and he remains an active figure in interviews and music projects.

Notable facts

Though often associated with punk's raw image, Matlock's background in 1960s pop and glam rock shaped much of the melodic content of early punk songs. Debates over songwriting credits and interpretation of events from the 1970s continue among historians and participants, but Matlock's influence on the sound and structure of the Sex Pistols' early material is widely acknowledged.
