Elaine Chao

Early life and education

Chao emigrated to the United States as a child. She completed undergraduate studies at Mount Holyoke College and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. Early in her career she worked in both government and finance before moving into higher-level federal appointments.

• Deputy Secretary of Transportation under President George H. W. Bush.
• 24th United States Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush (2001–2009): led the Department of Labor through two presidential terms.
