Design and layout

The station combines different structural forms to serve two lines. The North South Line platforms are elevated and use a split side-platform arrangement — each platform serves one direction and they are separated rather than sharing a common island. The Circle Line platforms are underground with conventional island platform arrangements. One unusual feature at Bishan is that some fare gates are located on the same level as the platforms rather than in a separate concourse area.

Facilities and services

Bishan station offers the standard amenities expected of Singapore's rapid transit stations: sheltered platforms, lifts and escalators for step-free access, tactile guidance for visually impaired passengers, passenger information displays and ticketing machines. It opens directly onto Junction 8 shopping mall and adjoins the Bishan Bus Interchange, providing seamless transfers between rail and bus services. The station serves daily commuters, shoppers and visitors to nearby parks and schools.

History and development

Bishan was one of the original stations on the North South Line and later became an interchange when the Circle Line connection was added. The Circle Line platforms at Bishan were brought into service in October 2017, completing an interchange link that improved network connectivity in central and northern parts of the island. Over time the station area has evolved with urban redevelopment of Bishan New Town.
