Dominick "Dom" DeLuise (August 1, 1933 – May 4, 2009) was an American performer known for his broad comic presence on stage, screen and television. Over a career that spanned decades he worked as an actor, voice actor, comedian, director, television producer and author. He became widely recognized for his warm, larger-than-life persona, frequent collaborations with other comedians and filmmakers, and for bringing a theatrical, improvisational energy to both live and recorded comedy.

Career and collaborations

DeLuise appeared in more than one hundred film and television productions across a variety of genres, from television variety programs to feature comedies. He was a regular presence on television variety shows in the 1960s and 1970s and made memorable appearances in motion pictures alongside major comic talents. He developed long-running working relationships with filmmakers and performers, often appearing in films directed by Mel Brooks and in multiple projects with actor Burt Reynolds. In animated work he lent his voice to several films by director Don Bluth, becoming a familiar voice to younger audiences as well as adults.

Style and notable roles

DeLuise's comic style combined physical expressiveness, a warm vocal delivery and improvisational instincts. He was comfortable in slapstick, character bits and rapid-fire banter, and he frequently played exuberant supporting characters who could dominate a scene. His voice acting drew on the same qualities—he could convey mischief, gentleness or comic exasperation with equal ease—making him a sought-after performer for animated features and television cartoons.

Other pursuits: writing and cooking

Outside acting, DeLuise had an active interest in food and cooking. He published cookbooks that reflected his enthusiasm for home cooking and family meals, and he often spoke about food in interviews and television appearances. His books blended recipes with personal anecdotes, revealing a public figure who valued conviviality and the domestic side of celebrity life.

Personal life and family

DeLuise was married to actress Carol Arthur from 1965 until his death in 2009. The marriage produced three sons, each of whom pursued careers in the entertainment industry:

  • Peter DeLuise — actor, director and writer
  • David DeLuise — actor
  • Michael DeLuise — actor

Family and frequent collaborators remained important throughout his life; he was known for longstanding friendships with creative partners and for mentoring younger performers.

Legacy and significance

Dom DeLuise is remembered as a versatile character comedian who could move easily between physical comedy, heartfelt character work and voice roles. His collaborations with prominent directors and comedians helped shape a recognizable strand of American comedy in the late 20th century. While often cast in supporting parts, his presence tended to lift scenes and provide comic momentum; his work continues to be rediscovered by audiences through film retrospectives, television reruns and animated classics.
