Birmingham Triennial Music Festival

History and purpose

Originally established as a vehicle to raise funds for local causes — notably medical charities and civic institutions — the festival quickly became an artistic centrepiece for the city. Its programmes emphasized new, often commissioned, large-scale works such as oratorios, and drew leading British and foreign composers and performers of the 19th century. The festival continued in various forms until its final edition in 1912.
