Early life and education

Harding studied trumpet as a teenager at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester and joined the National Youth Orchestra when he was 13. At 17 he organised a small group to perform Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, a recording of which he sent to conductor Simon Rattle. Impressed by the tape, Rattle invited Harding to serve as his assistant at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for the 1993–1994 season. Harding then began studies at the University of Cambridge, but after his first year he accepted an invitation from Claudio Abbado to assist with the Berlin Philharmonic, which accelerated his professional development.
