Geography and area

According to the United States Census Bureau Carteret encompasses about 5.000 square miles in total area, of which roughly 4.418 square miles is land and 0.582 square miles is water, making water nearly 12% of its area. Its waterfront locations and access to the Arthur Kill shaped both its industrial development and local ecology.

History and development

The borough developed as an industrial and shipping center because of its waterfront. Over the course of the 20th century, manufacturing, chemical plants and port-related facilities dominated the local economy. In recent decades parts of the industrial shoreline have been the focus of environmental remediation and redevelopment efforts to support new logistics and light-industrial uses while preserving residential neighborhoods.

Population and demographics

Census counts show steady growth during the late 20th and early 21st centuries: the population recorded by the 2010 Census was 22,844, up from 20,709 in the 2000 Census and 19,025 in the 1990 Census. The borough is ethnically and culturally diverse, with a mix of long-term residents and newer immigrant families that contribute to local schools, businesses and community institutions.
