Overview
Prince Benedetto Maria Maurizio of Savoy (21 June 1741 – 4 January 1808) was a member of the Italian House of Savoy who bore the princely title Duke of Chablais. Born during the reign of his father, Charles Emmanuel III, King of Sardinia, Benedetto spent his life in the orbit of the Sardinian court. He is remembered for his service to the kingdom, his urban residence in Turin, and for having no surviving children.
Family, title and position
As a younger son of the ruling house, Benedetto held dynastic rank but lacked a direct claim to the crown. The title Duke of Chablais was attached to him as a princely dignity within the Savoyard peerage; it identified him as part of the extended royal family and provided social and ceremonial responsibilities at court. The dukedom and his princely status defined his public role and patronage opportunities within the kingdom and the city of Turin.
Military career and public role
Benedetto pursued a military career in the service of the Kingdom of Sardinia, a common path for younger princes of the era. Contemporary accounts emphasize that he was a capable and active officer who occupied command and administrative posts within the Sardinian armed forces. Though he did not acquire the historical renown of some wartime commanders, his service was regarded as distinguished within the kingdom’s military establishment.
Marriage, heirs and legacy
He married a member of his own family — reported in traditional sources as his niece — a pattern not unusual among European dynasties seeking to preserve dynastic ties and property. The union produced no surviving descendants, and therefore Benedetto’s line did not continue. His personal legacy was expressed instead through his patronage, military service, and the buildings associated with him.
Residence: Palazzo Chiablese
Benedetto was the owner and resident of the Palazzo Chiablese in Turin, a princely townhouse connected with the royal palace complex and used by members of the Savoy family. The Palazzo became associated with his name and functioned as a center for his household and courtly life. In later centuries it has been noted as part of Turin’s architectural heritage and as a reminder of the Savoyard era.
