Overview
Barbara Pierce Bush (June 8, 1925 – April 17, 2018) was an American public figure best known as the wife of the 41st president of the United States, George H.W. Bush. She served as First Lady from 1989 to 1993 and before that as Second Lady from 1981 to 1989. During her years in Washington and afterward she attracted attention for her plainspoken manner, loyalty to family, and steady presence at many moments in late 20th-century American public life.
Born Barbara Pierce, she married George H.W. Bush and raised a large family that included six children, among them George W. Bush and Jeb Bush. As a political spouse she combined a role as a hostess and public representative with a focus on social causes.
Public life and causes
Barbara Bush made literacy and family reading her signature issue. She helped found and support organizations devoted to improving literacy and promoting reading in early childhood and adult education. Her advocacy emphasized practical programs, volunteerism, and partnerships with local communities. She also supported other charitable and civic activities connected to health and family services.
Her public persona was marked by direct remarks, frequent humor, and a traditional approach to the duties of a presidential spouse. She wrote and contributed to books and public statements that reflected on political life, family, and public service.
Personal life, later years and legacy
After leaving the White House the Bushes returned to Texas, where Barbara remained active in philanthropic work. In later years she limited public appearances as her health declined and ultimately decided against aggressive medical interventions near the end of life. She died in 2018 at the age of 92. Many remember her for elevating literacy as a national concern and for cultivating an image of resilience and domestic dedication in public office.
