Overview

2PM is a South Korean boy band created by JYP Entertainment as a performance-oriented counterpart to the vocal-focused group 2AM. The group officially debuted in 2008 and became known for strong choreography, athletic stage presence and a masculine image that contrasted with many contemporaneous K-pop acts. Early singles introduced them to domestic and international audiences and helped establish a dedicated fanbase.

Members and lineup

After its debut the lineup changed early on when one original member left; the core group most widely associated with the name 2PM comprises six performers. Members have taken part in recording, live performance, acting, variety programs and overseas promotions. The group's fandom is commonly known by the nickname "Hottest."

Musical style and public image

2PM's sound ranges from energetic dance-pop to midtempo R&B and pop-rock influences. They have been praised for synchronized and physically demanding choreography, including acrobatic elements and concept-driven performances. Compared with 2AM, which emphasized ballad singing, 2PM presented a more intense, performance-heavy identity—an arrangement the two groups were initially designed to complement.

History and notable events

The group debuted with a single that introduced their performance focus, and later releases helped consolidate their reputation. An early controversy led to the departure of a founding member, after which the remaining members continued and built a career across Korea and abroad. In the late 2010s, members began fulfilling mandatory military service, which resulted in a temporary pause in some group activities. After members completed service at different times, 2PM resumed group projects alongside individual careers.

Solo activities, acting and other projects

Beyond group work, members have pursued solo music, acting roles in film, television and musicals, hosting and variety appearances. These activities broadened their profiles and introduced them to audiences outside standard pop channels. Individual endeavors have included solo albums, acting roles and appearances on variety shows, contributing to the group's longevity.

Legacy and distinctions

2PM is often cited as an example of a performance-centered idol group that maintained mainstream popularity while members explored solo careers. Their contrast with the contemporaneous group 2AM and emphasis on choreography and stagecraft are notable features of their legacy.
