Overview

The 2016–17 Liga I was the 99th edition of Romania's top professional football competition. The campaign ran from 23 July 2016 until May 2017 and concluded with Viitorul Constanța winning the championship. The league is commonly referred to as Liga I and forms the top tier of the Romanian football system (football in Romania).

Competition format

Fourteen teams contested the season. During the regular season each club played the others twice in a double round-robin schedule, after which the table was split: the top six entered a Championship round to decide the title and European qualification, while the remaining eight took part in a Relegation round to determine demotion to the second tier. Points earned in the regular season were carried forward but reduced according to the competition rules in force that year.

Participants and movement between divisions

The league's lineup combined established Liga I clubs with teams promoted from Liga II. At the close of the previous season some clubs were relegated and replaced by successful second‑division sides, as is the standard promotion and relegation practice in Romanian football. The season attracted attention for the mix of historic clubs and newer projects aiming to consolidate their position in the top flight.

Champion and club profile

Viitorul Constanța secured the title, marking a milestone for the club. Founded as a development-focused team, Viitorul is known for an emphasis on youth coaching and for its association with former international star Gheorghe Hagi. Their championship was widely seen as the result of a sustained youth policy combined with consistent league performances.

Significance and aftermath

The season determined Romania's representatives for UEFA club competitions: the champions entered Champions League qualifying rounds while other high finishers qualified for the Europa League qualifiers. The Relegation round decided which clubs dropped to Liga II. Beyond standings, the campaign was notable for competitive balance, managerial changes at several clubs, and the continued development of young players who would go on to feature domestically and abroad.
