Elizabeth "Betty" Driver MBE (20 May 1920 – 15 October 2011) was an English actress and singer best known for portraying Betty Williams (formerly Turpin) in the television soap Coronation Street. She inhabited the same role from 1969 until her death in 2011, becoming one of the programme's longest-serving and most recognisable performers and appearing in more than 2,700 episodes.

Early life and performing background

Driver was born in Leicester, in the East Midlands of England. She began working as a child performer and developed skills in singing and stagecraft that sustained a career in variety, radio and light entertainment long before her television breakthrough. Her early experience as a live and recording performer helped shape the gentle, musical qualities she brought to later screen roles.

Coronation Street and the character of Betty

On Coronation Street Driver's character became a familiar presence in the community, known for a warm, modest persona that endeared her to viewers. Over four decades the role evolved with the series, and Betty's steady presence provided continuity as the programme changed around her. Driver's long tenure made her part of the soap's institutional memory and a symbol of its domestic, neighbourhood focus.

Recognition and later life

Driver's contribution to entertainment was recognised by honours during her lifetime, reflecting both her performing career and her cultural significance to British television audiences. She continued to appear on screen well into later life, maintaining a public profile while drawing praise for professionalism and warmth.

Legacy and death

Driver died in Cheadle, in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport (Cheadle, Greater Manchester) in 2011. Her passing prompted widespread remembrance from colleagues, viewers and media commentators who noted the rarity of such long, steady service in a single role. She is remembered both as a performer in her own right and for helping to define a beloved television character across generations.
