Overview

珠海 (Zhūhǎi) is a coastal prefecture-level city in southern China, located on the northern shore of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province. Administratively part of China, Zhuhai faces the special administrative region of Macau to the south and lies close to major Delta cities such as Shenzhen. The city is known for a long, island-studded coastline, relatively low-rise urban planning in many districts, a mild subtropical climate and a reputation as a pleasant seaside destination.

Geography and environment

Zhuhai’s territory includes a mainland area and a large number of islands and islets. Its coastline features bays, peninsulas and promenades that support tourism, fisheries and maritime activities. The climate is generally warm and humid, with a clear rainy season and a drier, cooler period in winter; this supports subtropical vegetation and makes the city attractive for seaside recreation. Urban development has aimed to balance built-up areas with coastal parks and green corridors, and several islands have been developed as resorts or conservation areas.

History and development

Historically a region of fishing villages, small towns and farmland, Zhuhai underwent rapid transformation after economic reforms in China. In the 1980s it was designated one of the country’s first Special Economic Zones, a policy that encouraged foreign investment, export-oriented industry and urban expansion. Over subsequent decades the city diversified into light manufacturing, services, technology and tourism. Its development has been influenced by proximity to Macau, Hong Kong and the rapidly industrializing cities of the Pearl River Delta.

Administration and urban districts

Zhuhai is administered as a prefecture-level city and contains multiple urban districts and county-level divisions. The urban core includes districts where government, commercial and cultural institutions are concentrated, while outlying districts and islands retain a mixture of industrial zones, agricultural land and resort areas. Some parts of Zhuhai’s northern districts are increasingly integrated with the larger Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration, reflecting regional planning to improve coordination across municipal boundaries.

Economy

The local economy blends tourism, light industry, electronics manufacturing, precision instruments and an expanding service sector. Zhuhai has hosted trade fairs and industry exhibitions, and it attracts visitors for its beaches, island resorts and waterfront promenades. Economic policy has often emphasized openness, foreign trade and attracting technology- and service-oriented enterprises while maintaining a visitor-friendly urban environment.

Zhuhai’s transport network connects it to neighbouring cities and special administrative regions by road, bridge, sea and rail. Ferry routes and cross-sea links shorten travel times to Macau and to Hong Kong, and expressways tie Zhuhai into the Pearl River Delta road network. Recent infrastructure projects have reinforced Zhuhai’s role as a gateway between the mainland and nearby coastal territories, facilitating passenger travel and freight movement across the region.

Demographics and culture

Like many coastal cities in the delta, Zhuhai has attracted migrants from other parts of China, producing a diverse urban population. Local, long-established communities traditionally speak Cantonese and related dialects, while Mandarin is widely used in administration, education and among migrants. The city emphasizes cultural amenities such as museums, parks, waterfront promenades and public festivals that reflect both local Cantonese traditions and newer urban lifestyles.

Tourism and attractions

  • Beaches and island resorts: a primary draw for domestic visitors and regional weekend travel.
  • Waterfront promenades and coastal parks: designed for recreation and public access to the shore.
  • Maritime and aviation exhibitions: Zhuhai hosts trade events that attract regional and international participants.
  • Cross-border tourism: proximity to Macau and convenient links to other delta cities support multi-destination travel.

Role in the Greater Bay Area

Zhuhai is part of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area planning framework and contributes to the region’s integration of finance, trade, innovation and transport. Its coastal location, port facilities and cross-border links complement nearby manufacturing and innovation centres such as Shenzhen. As regional planning continues, Zhuhai’s mix of tourism, manufacturing and services positions it as both a residential and recreational node within the larger delta metropolis.
