Origins and development

The Hall of Fame was inaugurated in 1993. Its first inductee was the celebrated wrestler André the Giant, who had recently passed away; that posthumous induction set a precedent for honoring foundational figures. The concept was revived in 2004 and thereafter became an annual feature of WWE programming, usually scheduled during the WrestleMania weekend and presented as a public ceremony that often accompanies promotional activities.

Selection, categories and ceremony

WWE does not publish a formal, transparent set of criteria for induction; selections are determined internally by company management. Common categories include:

• Individual performers (in-ring careers and accomplishments)
• Tag teams or groups
• Celebrity contributors (actors, musicians, or personalities who took part in memorable storylines)
• Pioneers or legacy honorees, recognizing early-era wrestlers and promoters

Induction ceremonies typically feature a presenter who gives a speech about the inductee, followed by acceptance remarks. In many years the events have been televised or made available through WWE's streaming platforms, and highlights have been distributed in other media.

The Hall of Fame functions both as a public celebration of careers and as a promotional vehicle. Inductions provide storytelling opportunities, revive interest in past eras, and create moments that bridge generations of fans.

Notable aspects of the Hall of Fame include occasional controversies: some selections—particularly celebrity inductees or figures with disputed legacies—have drawn criticism from fans and historians.
