Geography and landscape

Geographically the district occupies the fertile Wetterau plain, between the low Taunus hills to the west and the volcanic highlands of the Taunus and Vogelsberg to the east. The main waterways are the Nidda and the Wetter rivers, which historically watered rich loess soils; today the area mixes open farmland, orchard and vineyard plots with patches of forest and small river valleys.

History and development

The Wetterau has long been a settled and agriculturally productive region. Archaeological traces and old trade routes testify to Roman-era and medieval activity, and a network of small market towns grew up in the Middle Ages. The modern district was shaped by territorial changes and municipal reform in the twentieth century, bringing together historic communities under a common administration.
