Physical geography

The Bamboutos Mountains are the dominant landform, forming volcanic ridges and rounded peaks. Major waterways and bodies of water mentioned in regional descriptions include the Noun River and other important streams, while reservoirs and lakes such as Bamendjing Reservoir, Lake Baleng and the twin lakes near Foumbot punctuate the landscape. Numerous waterfalls—locally known and visited—drop from the uplands into river valleys, examples being Balatchi, Metché and Tsugning Falls. These features create a mosaic of farmland, forest patches and wetlands.

Economy and land use

Agriculture is the backbone of the regional economy. Fertile volcanic soils and a temperate upland climate support mixed farming: subsistence food crops alongside commercial crops. Farmers grow tubers, cereals and plantains, and cultivate cash crops such as coffee and other exportable produce. Small-scale livestock rearing, market gardening and agroforestry are common. Artisanal and craft activities—wood carving, weaving and pottery—also contribute to household incomes and regional trade.

People, culture and history

The West Region is home to several closely related cultural groups often collectively referred to as Bamileke. Traditional chiefdoms, palaces, masked dances and festivals play an important role in social life. Historical patterns of settlement and local governance were later affected by colonial administration and national policies, but customary authorities and cultural institutions remain central to identity, land management and ceremonies.

Administration, transport and conservation

Administratively the region is divided into departments and communes with Bafoussam serving as the regional hub for government, commerce and services. Road networks link towns and rural areas, though terrain can make travel seasonally difficult in places. Conservation and water management efforts are relevant around reservoirs, lakes and forest remnants, balancing agricultural needs with protection of soils and freshwater resources.
