Overview
Viva Pink is one of the branded rapid transit services in the Viva network serving York Region north of Toronto. Operated under contract to the Region of York, the line provides peak-period bus rapid transit between the Yonge Street corridor and Highway 7, connecting major transit hubs and commuter destinations. Service is limited to weekday peak periods, focusing on high-demand commuter flows.
Route and stations
The line runs generally from Finch in the southwest, north along Yonge Street to Richmond Hill Centre, and then east along Highway 7 toward Unionville GO Station. In total there are 21 stations on the Viva Pink corridor, including terminal interchanges that link with subway, GO and local bus services. The route is intended to speed travel along two of York Region's busiest corridors and to provide frequent, direct trips during rush hours.
Operation and vehicles
Viva Pink is operated by a contracted private operator for York Region Transit (YRT). Vehicles on Viva routes are distinctively branded and, where appropriate, include articulated buses to handle high passenger volumes. The Viva network uses a mix of curbside and centre-median stations; along the corridor, features such as enhanced shelters, real-time information displays and transit signal priority help reduce delays and improve reliability.
History and development
Viva Pink entered service on January 2, 2006, as part of the phased rollout of the Viva rapid transit network intended to improve regional mobility and provide a higher-quality alternative to conventional bus service. The line's routing reflects planning goals to concentrate frequent service on Yonge and Highway 7, corridors that have experienced growth in employment and residential development.
Connections and importance
- Interchanges with TTC subway service and other YRT/Viva lines at Finch and Richmond Hill Centre provide onward travel options.
- Connections to GO Transit commuter rail and regional bus services at Unionville and other terminals support longer-distance commuting patterns.
- The peak-only pattern focuses resources where demand is greatest, complementing all-day routes on the same corridors.
