Usora (river)

Sources, branches and course

The river system has two principal upper stems commonly known in local usage as Velika Usora (Great Usora) and Mala Usora (Little Usora). Velika Usora is formed by the merger of smaller mountain streams, including the Gomjenica and Brkića streams, while Mala Usora rises on the southern side of the main M‑4 road near Pribinić. The two branches join at a locality called Sastavci below Teslić. The Usora’s headwaters lie on the slopes of the Očauš mountain range (Očauš) and along the Uzlomac–Borja–Očauš massif (Uzlomac and Borja), and its lower reaches meet the Bosna River (Bosna) near Doboj.

Tributaries and hydrology

The river receives numerous small tributaries and mountain streams. Notable right-bank feeders below Sastavci include the Mišića rijeka, Velika Ostružnja, Inova, Miljkovača, Velika rijeka and Brezna. Left-bank tributaries include streams such as Rankovića rijeka and Gračanica. In its upper section the river makes a broad arc around the slopes of Borja, reflecting the local topography. Like many rivers in the region, the Usora is subject to seasonal variability and recurring floods that affect settlements and agricultural land along its floodplain.

History and human use

Historically, the Usora basin was known to local populations for alluvial minerals: small-scale gold panning in upper gravel deposits is documented in early Bosnian sources and local tradition, although it is not an industrial-scale activity today. The river valley has long supported timber, small-scale agriculture and settlement; Teslić developed as an industrial and market town where the two Usora branches meet. The area is connected by regional roads, including the corridor linking Banja Luka and other inland centres (Banja Luka).

Environmental issues and potential

The Usora retains potential for small-scale hydropower and local water uses, but these resources are only partially developed. Aquatic biodiversity and fish stocks have been reduced in some stretches by pollution from untreated industrial effluents and municipal discharges; long-standing industrial activity in Teslić and surrounding settlements — including operations associated with wood distillation and other chemical processes — have contributed to water-quality concerns (industrial discharges, wood distillation). Restoration and pollution control measures would be needed to recover fisheries and realise hydro‑energy potential while protecting communities from flood risk.
