Overview

Tuas Crescent MRT station (EW31) is an elevated station on the East West Line of Singapore's rapid transit network. It serves the Tuas industrial district in western Singapore and takes its name from the nearby Tuas Crescent road. The station is part of an extension intended to improve public transport access to heavy industrial and port-related areas and is operated by SMRT Trains.

Design and facilities

The station is constructed above ground with tracks running on an elevated viaduct to cross industrial roads and service yards. It provides platforms and passenger circulation spaces designed for commuter flows at shift change times common in industrial precincts. Typical features include sheltered platforms, lifts and escalators for barrier-free access, customer service and ticketing facilities, and provisions for signage and safety systems consistent with other East West Line stations.

History and development

Tuas Crescent was developed as part of the Tuas West Extension, which extended rail services further west into the Tuas area. The extension was completed and opened in June 2017 to meet growing demand from workers and businesses in the industrial zone. During planning the station was assigned a provisional code (W16) before receiving its operational station code EW31 upon opening.

Services, role and importance

The station handles commuter traffic for employees, suppliers and visitors to the industrial estates around Tuas. It connects with road transport services and is integrated into the broader East West Line, enabling travel between Tuas and central and eastern parts of the island. The station helps reduce travel times compared with road-only travel, eases congestion on peak routes and supports economic activity by improving access to industrial sites.

Notable facts and context

  • Tuas Crescent is one of several stations added west of the older network to serve expanding industrial areas.
  • Its presence reflects transport planning that extends rail infrastructure to employment hubs rather than only residential areas.
  • For general information about the Mass Rapid Transit system, see MRT; for local area details consult resources on Tuas.

While stations in industrial districts often have lower off-peak ridership than central urban stations, they play a strategic role by providing reliable shifts-based transit and supporting logistics and workforce mobility. Tuas Crescent therefore forms a practical link in Singapore's multi-modal transport network and contributes to the operational resilience of the eastern and western rail corridors.
