Physical characteristics

Traunsee is of glacial origin: its long basin was carved and deepened during the ice ages and later modified by post-glacial processes. The eastern flank rises dramatically toward the mountain known as Traunstein, which towers above the shore. Water in the lake is generally clear and cold, supporting typical central-European freshwater fauna. The lake receives and releases water through the local river system and smaller tributaries, and the steep banks on some sides can form cliffs and narrow littoral zones.
