Overview
Torreón is one of the 38 municipalities of the state of Coahuila in northeastern Mexico. The municipal seat and largest urban center is the city of Torreón. The municipality covers 1,947.7 square kilometres (752.0 square miles) and, according to the 2005 census data, had a population of 577,477. It functions as a major hub within the wider Comarca Lagunera region, which spans parts of Coahuila and neighboring Durango.
Geography and climate
The municipality lies in a semi-arid high plain. The terrain is generally flat to gently rolling, with irrigated areas where agriculture is concentrated. Seasonal temperature extremes are common: summers tend to be hot while winters are mild to cool. Water for farming and urban use in the region has historically depended on an irrigation network and reservoirs serving the Comarca Lagunera.
History and development
The urban growth of Torreón is tied to late 19th- and early 20th-century patterns of railway expansion, irrigation projects and regional trade. Over time the city and its municipality evolved from an agricultural service center into a more diversified economy with industrial and commercial activities. The name "Torreón" refers to a historic watchtower or fortified structure that once marked key local vantage points.
Economy and land use
The municipality's economy combines agriculture, manufacturing, commerce and services. Irrigated agriculture in the surrounding district produces cotton, vegetables and other regional crops, while urban areas support manufacturing, retail, education and healthcare. Torreón serves as a logistics and transport node for northern Mexico and the surrounding rural hinterland.
Government, population and subdivisions
Municipal government is centered in the city of Torreón and administers a variety of neighborhoods (colonias), outlying communities and rural ejidos. As with other Mexican municipalities, responsibilities include local public services, urban planning, public security and municipal infrastructure. Population growth has been driven by urbanization and the municipality remains one of the most populous in Coahuila.
